Updated 3.27.2008

Tuesday, March 11

  • 5th
  • Review: P. 348; 45-47, 52-53, 57 due
  • 6th/7th
  • Review: P. 348; 45-47, 52-53, 57 due
  • *Intro. to Chapter 11
  • Energy transfer - moving energy from place to place (use water on hot plate as example)
    • conduction - physical contact between materials (touching material)
      • Physical contact necessary; best for solids and liquids (heat transfer for objects in contact) Different substances conduct heat better than others - metals better than nonmetals and it varies by substance - show color changing rod heat conduction demo. Air is a great insulator.
    • convection - movement of fluid to move energy
      • Wind, HVAC, etc..
    • radiation - no matter needed between source an adsorbing material
      • light from the sun gives us energy (infrared radiation)
      • Demonstrate heat cans (heating and cooling) and radiation cube

Wednesday, March 12
